How a website appears in AI answers: five distinct stages

First a page must be accessible, then discovered and selected for a specific answer. A citation means a link to a source; a recommendation means suggesting that someone choose a company or product. These are different outcomes, and each requires its own evidence.

What each signal tells you

A working address confirms only that the page is accessible from the test location. A search engine may learn a URL through links or a sitemap without adding it to its index yet. Even an indexed article may not suit a particular question: the result depends on the user’s task and the sources selected.

Keep the stages separate in your report. “The page returns 200,” “the search engine reported an indexed URL” and “ChatGPT linked to the article” should have different records. A query without web search is also not equivalent to a search check. Publishing new text does not rewrite a trained model at the owner’s request.

How to find where the path breaks

Choose one public article and one natural customer question. First check the address, server response content and access restrictions. Then inspect the URL status in the connected search engine. After that, obtain a real answer from the relevant AI service through an available web interface and save it in full.

For example, an article may already be indexed but fail to explain the criteria for choosing a service. Resubmitting a sitemap does not solve that content problem. If the server instead returns a security challenge page, resolve that first rather than rewriting a heading for an assumed algorithm.

How AURA GEO helps

In the project overview, AURA stores the sequence of preparation, publication, submission and URL verification. Monitoring lets you save an individual AI answer with links; analytics records observed visits. Auri helps gather context and pass a plan to your agent.

Start with a small, verifiable step. The agent reads the project state, chooses a task, performs an authorized action and updates the status. The absence of a saved citation means an observation is missing from this sample, not that the website has been proven absent from every system.

What a useful outcome looks like

A good report answers three questions: what is already confirmed, where exactly the obstacle is, and which next action will test the hypothesis. Include the date, URL and original response from the verification source. Do not turn citation counts into estimated leads: enquiries need their own events. This approach makes progress visible even before the first recommendation and avoids paying for pointless repeat submissions.

Conditions and limitations
  • Accessibility does not guarantee indexing or a recommendation.
  • The external agent must actually obtain the service’s answer.
